“Ireally just want to get this over with,” said Dan as they approached Andrew’s old house.

“Trust me,” said Andrew. “This is a good idea.”

Apparently they needed to make a stop off. Andrew was effervescing. Whatever had upset him earlier had been forgotten with the news of Scratchtacular.

The Flash, Nutcup, and Twig followed, lost in what appeared to be animated conversation. Catman brought up the rear.

“I kind of want to go now or I think I will totally lose my nerve,” Dan said.

“Don’t worry,” said Andrew. “It won’t take long. I sent Thomas a text when we received our quest. He’s got them ready.”

Andrew’s brother, Thomas, was renting his old house. Dan had yet to meet him.

“You told him about the quest?”

“Oh, we share everything.”

“So he knows about …” Dan circled a hand over Andrew’s torso. “You being indestructible.”

“We’re twins. He pretty much already knew. He actually text me right after I got shot to ask if I was dead. Funny story actually. He really freaked out when I didn’t text back the next day.”

“Hilarious. I didn’t know he was your twin.”

“Identical but he looks nothing like me, and he’s a bit of a hippy, you know? We don’t talk much. Just an hour every Tuesday and Friday afternoon on the phone. And dinner at Mum’s on Sunday. And a quick catch-up Monday morning. There’s never enough time, is there?”

Dan couldn’t remember the last time he’d spoken to his own sister. He’d thought they were pretty close. Did people really hang out that much? Why?

They stepped onto Andrew’s garden path.

“But your mum’s house is four hours away from where you live now?”

“I know, right. Basically strangers. If he offers you a coffee, say no.”

Dan gazed up the street towards their old home. The hedge he’d never touched was now trimmed. It looked neat. Something ached at him there. A potential missed. How had the rest of the place changed since they’d left? Had they already fixed the ever-bubbling toilet? The cat scratched skirting by the door? The chipped side in the kitchen where Amy had tried to impress him with the opening of a beer bottle after learning the trick from one of her girls? Imperfectly perfect parts of his old home that he’d learnt to live with wrapped up with all the memories of them together. He felt an unexpected longing for their life before, to do it better or differently, to relive the memories held within those walls, from a time when his troubles hadn’t been so troublesome.

The door opened before they’d had a chance to knock. Thomas wore a smock covered in swipes of orange, red, and black paint. He looked almost identical to Andrew. So close that Dan did a double take. His beard was an inch or two longer and his hair hung to his shoulders, but they were the same person.

“Brother,” Thomas said, folding his arms across his chest. “I sensed your approach.”

“Brother,” replied Andrew. “Painting?”

“How did you guess?”

Dan frowned at the paint covered smock.
